This small Comfort Bird has been carved from a single piece of exotic African Blackwood. Native to East Africa, African Blackwood grows extremely slowly—often taking 70–100+ years to reach harvest size—and only a small percentage of each tree is suitable for fine work. Its extraordinary density, stability, and jet-black to dark purple heartwood have made it the gold standard for clarinets, oboes, bagpipes, and other precision instruments, which in turn has driven demand while supply has steadily declined.
I consider it a privilege to work with woods such as Pink Ivory and African Blackwood, which are some of the most highly prized woods in the world.
