This little bird has a big story. Carved from a highly figured remnant of walnut, this bird began as a piece of wood that might easily have been passed over. Its rich grain and beautiful character caught my attention, but its imperfections presented more than a few challenges.
It took several rounds of carefully applied epoxy, a little trial and error, and a good measure of patience before the wood was ready to take shape. The result isn’t the most elegant bird I’ve ever carved. But it is certainly one of the most endearing.
Its unusual contours, dramatic grain, and beautifully imperfect character tell a story of persistence, discovery, and the joy of finding something wonderful in what might otherwise have been discarded.
And, I believe that’s part of what makes a Comfort Bird so meaningful. Beauty doesn’t always come from perfection. Sometimes it comes from being willing to see the possibilities in something others might overlook.
This friend took a little more time, a little more patience, and ultimately captured a little more of my heart. I hope it brings that same sense of warmth and delight to the hands of whoever gives it a home.
